Despite a clever ad campaign that says otherwise, the Toyota Sienna lost some swagger with its redesign, dropping significantly in points. While the redesigned Toyota Sienna is a very good vehicle, it doesn't measure up to the previous model, which had been our top-rated minivan for three years. The Sienna is still roomy, fuel efficient, and has a smooth ride, but lackluster handling and drops in interior fit and finish, ergonomics, and quietness, among other things, contributed to its lower overall test score. The six-year-old Honda Odyssey now leads the category. A redesigned Odyssey is due out this fall.
Power comes from a carryover 3.5-liter V6 engine and a newly available 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine. Fuel economy improves slightly with the redesign, aided by the smooth six-speed automatic and electric power steering.
To evaluate the main variations, we bought three Siennas: a front-drive four-cylinder, front-drive V6, and all-wheel-drive. Road tests for the six-cylinder models are live on ConsumerReports.org, and we will be adding the test of the less-expensive four-cylinder version soon.
Along with the Odyssey, freshened versions of the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans are expected in showrooms for 2011, as well as a redesigned Nissan Quest.
