Video report: One dishwasher gets a raspberry in our tests

Consumer Reports News: August 16, 2010 12:34 PM

During our recent tests of dishwashers, one model got into a jam and drew a raspberry from our testers for its inability to clean ... well, raspberry jam. The jam is one of the foods our testers use to dirty dishes for our dishwasher tests. But the seeds clogged the spray arms and filters of the Asko D5233XXL, which degraded its cleaning performance. That's not an impressive result for a dishwasher that costs $1,500 and has a three-hour cycle.

Our survey of 114,000 readers who bought a dishwasher in the last five years resulted in another raspberry: Twenty-three percent reported that their LG dishwashers were repaired or had a serious problem. That moved LG into last place in our dishwasher reliability ratings below Fisher-Paykel (18 percent) and Asko (14 percent). Hotpoint and Whirlpool were deemed most reliable at an 8 percent repair rate each.

If your dishwasher has problems getting dishes clean, our post on dishwasher maintenance includes illustrated instructions on how to clear clogged spray arms and other ways to keep your machine running effectively.
