Is this Electrolux the most efficient washing machine in America?

Consumer Reports News: September 10, 2010 02:21 PM

You might think so, based on an a recent press release from Electrolux stating that "the Electrolux premium laundry collection [including the model pictured] was awarded the number one ranking in energy efficiency among Energy Star-qualified clothes washers." We've always known Energy Star to be a pass/fail system (that is, either an appliance meets the program's efficiency requirements or it doesn't) so we contacted Electrolux for more details, including a copy of the rankings.

We also asked the Environmental Protection Agency, which co-administers Energy Star with the Department of Energy, if it has started ranking products. Here's the September 3 statement we received from an EPA spokesperson:  "The EPA Energy Star program lists energy efficiency ratings for  60 products on its website. The agency lists the products in alphabetical order by product name, but does not rank the products. EPA updates the list at least once a month."

Earlier this week, we heard from Dean Brindle, product line manager for fabric care at Electrolux. He explained that Electrolux had arrived at its own ranking of Energy Star washers by sorting qualifying models by modified energy factor, one of several performance metrics included on the Energy Star website. He added that several other models from competing brands have jumped ahead of Electrolux since they crunched the numbers back in May. He also said the EPA has expressed concerns to Electrolux about its interpretation of the data, in particular the use of the term ranking. As a result, Electrolux will be issuing a revised press release later this month.

Here's what we can tell you about Electrolux washers based on Consumer Reports' energy-efficiency tests. Three front-loading washers from Electrolux's premium collection are indeed among the most efficient models in our current Ratings. The Electrolux Wave-Touch EWFLS70J[IW], in particular, stands out for its exceptional energy-savings. But other brands matched its efficiency in our tests, including the Kenmore 4903[2] front loader.

In other comparisons between these two high-efficiency models, Kenmore has the edge. For example, it's very good at washing, while the Electrolux is just good. And at $600, the Kenmore costs a fraction of the $1,500 Electrolux.

Bottom line: Electrolux washers can be extremely efficient, and several models excel in other areas, such as gentleness and capacity. But if you're looking for the number one washer in our Ratings, you'll have to choose another brand.
