Hyundai is recalling nearly 140,000 Sonatas due to a potential problem with the steering column intermediate shaft. The universal joint connections on the shaft may not be assembled properly or tightened sufficiently. This could cause a separation of the connections, which could result in the driver experiencing a loss or reduction in steering capability. If this occurs, of course, there would be an increased risk of crash.

This recall affects Sonatas built between December 11, 2009 and September 10, 2010.

Dealers will inspect the connections, confirm proper assembly, and update the power steering software free of charge. The recall will begin in October.
