Apple Press Conference 10/20/2010: Is Apple readying a netbook?

Rumor has it that an 11.6-inch MacBook Air is among the products Apple will announce during its press conference (which the company has named "Back to the Mac") tomorrow, along with an updated version of the 13.3-inch Air.

While many sites are referring to the smaller Air as a "netbook," it's definitely not going to be priced like a typical netbook, if rumors of a $999 price tag (at minimum) are true. It also will likely be more powerful than Windows netbooks. The current Air uses a Core 2 Duo processor, compared to the underpowered Atom processors utilized in netbooks, and odds are Apple wouldn't revert to a less powerful processor even for a smaller Air.

In addition, it's possible that the new Air will have a larger battery, and longer battery life of 8 to 10 hours. We got 4.25 hours of battery life from the MacBook Air we tested (available to subscribers).

The Mac operating system will almost certainly be in the spotlight at Wednesday's event. The invitation to the press conference features a lion, and Apple names its OS X upgrades after big cats—leopards and snow leopards for the most recent versions. The Wall Street Journal speculates that the new OS X will offer new features of interest to corporate customers. One of my favorite rumors comes from OS X Daily, which thinks an app store for Mac OS X is in the works.

I'll be attending the Apple event on Wednesday and will post updates as announcements are made.
