Escort, a company best known for making radar detectors, has jumped into the portable GPS navigation business with a device that combines a detector capable of picking up signals from both radar and laser speed-sensing devices, augmented by navigation capability.
The new Passport IQ has a large, five-inch screen, and it includes speed warnings to advise drivers when they're over the limit. It also can alert drivers to red light cameras and areas known to be popular spots for speed traps. More traditional portable GPS features like lane guidance and voice-guided, turn-by-turn directions are part of the package.
But these all-in-one approach doesn't come cheap. The Passport IQ lists for $649.95. The company has plans to launch another model with live traffic information and Bluetooth technology for hands-free phone calls. That way, at least, you can call your lawyer if all else fails.
