At Apple's "Back to the Mac" event today, new GarageBand features were announced.
If the players in your garage band aren't quite in sync with one another, GarageBand's new Groove Matching feature can fix your timing based on the instrument you pick that's most on beat. That's one of the new features in the next version of GarageBand. Another new feature, Flex Time, lets you stretch out a piece of audio or make it shorter to match up with other instruments in a piece of music.
Music lessons are built into the program for guitar and piano. There are lessons for blues guitar and classical piano, among others. An animated piano is visible below a high-def video of an instructor. When you're ready, you can play along. Sheet music shows up onscreen, and you can play along with recorded musicians.
In "Minuet in F Major," for example, you play along with an orchestra recorded in Vienna. A running score is kept of how you're doing, and mistakes show up in red and yellow, which you can later review. You can also review a history of what you've played.
The new GarageBand is free with every new Mac or available as a $50 upgrade.
