Live from Apple: Lion, Version 8 of Mac OS X, gets apps

Consumer Reports News: October 20, 2010 02:25 PM

Apple today announced the eighth version of Mac OS X, called Lion. Apple CEO Steve Jobs described the new OS as "X meets the iPad." A preview of features for Lion includes an app store, full-screen apps, and a home screen for your apps. Apps will auto-save and resume when they're launched.

The Mac app store will offer one-click downloads of apps and automatic installation and updates. Apps you download will be licensed for use on all your personal apps. The Launchpad will serve as a home screen for your apps.

Jobs said multi-touch will not be added to Mac displays. "Touch surfaces don't want to be vertical," said Jobs. "It's ergonomically terrible." Multi-touch will remain with touchpads and the Apple mouse.

The app store will show up on the dock. The store looks similar to that on the iPad, with featured apps, top sellers, and categories.

Launchpad also shows up in the dock. It will include all your apps, and when you click on it, the apps show up in a full-screen view. You can also organize apps into folders. You can use multi-touch gestures to move from one app to another.

The new Mission Control organizes all the windows you've got open in the middle of your screen, with full-screen apps visible on top of the screen and the Dashboard still on the bottom of the screen.

Lion is expected to be released this summer, but the app store will open within 90 days.
