Netflix streaming on the Wii: Disc no longer required

Consumer Reports News: October 19, 2010 11:18 AM

If you enjoy streaming Netflix movies and TV shows on Nintendo's Wii video game system, it just got a little easier: You no longer have to insert a Netflix disc into the console to activate streaming.

Instead, you need to go to the Wii Shop Channel and download a new Netflix application. Once installed, you'll be able to stream content without using the disc.

The Wii was the last game console that required a streaming disc. A recent update for the PlayStation3 gave it this ability, and Microsoft's Xbox has never required a streaming disc.

Just remember that to stream any Netflix content, you have to subscribe to a Netflix unlimited plan, which start at $9 per month, and have broadband access to the Internet. There's no aditional charge for streaming content to the TV from other devices for Netflix subscribers.
