BMW has issued a voluntary recall of 130,000 vehicles due to a problem with the fuel pump. Vehicles affected are equipped with the twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine and feature BMW's direct fuel injection system. The recall involves the following vehicles: 2007-2010 BMW 335i, 2008-2010 135i, 535i and X6 xDrive35i Sports Activity Coupes, and 2009-2010 Z4 roadsters with sDrive35i.
According to BMW, "affected vehicles may experience a failure of the high-pressure fuel pump." Other symptoms of the problem include a long crank engine start time and a light on the dashboard to service the engine would illuminate. In some cases the driver may have reduced engine performance.
Dealers will check the vehicles and about 40,000 will need a new high pressure fuel pump and some will require a software update.
BMW issued the recall a few hours after an ABC News investigation highlighting the defective fuel pump.
In a separate action, BMW is also recalling about 20,800 2008 X5 SUVs to replace the low-pressure fuel pump. If the fuel pump fails the engine will stop and the driver will not have power assist for the steering and brakes. The vehicle will go into "limp home" mode, which allows drivers to operate both steering and brakes and safely pull off the road.
No injuries have been reported in either of the recalls. Owners can contact BMW at 1-800-563-4269 or via email at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.
