T-Mobile just introduced the Android-based G2 smart phone, successor to the G1, the granddaddy of all Android smart phones. How does it stack up now that the market's teeming with Android phones?

Senior Electronics Editor Mike Gikas has been testing the G2; in last week's "Into Tomorrow with Dave Graveline," Dave asked Mike for his take. In this Sound Byte podcast (click to listen), Mike lays out the most salient features of the new smart phone.

The Android-based T2:

  • Is the first smart phone to run on T-Mobile's new HSPA+ high-speed network.
  • Has a 37-inch 3.7-inch high-resolution touch-screen display.
  • Supports Google Voice, which routes calls made to other phones to the G2 and transcribes voicemail to text.
  • Has a hinged physical keyboard which can swing slightly forward.
  • Also has two virtual keyboards, one standard and one "swipe."
  • Is $200 with a 2-year contract.

Until next week, happy smart-phoning, all!

About Sound Bytes
Every week, Consumer Reports experts produce a short (less than two minutes in length) audio segment which cover a wide variety of issues regarding consumer electronics and technology. These small "sound bites" can be heard on Into Tomorrow with Dave Graveline. The Sound Byte that is featured in the Consumer Reports Electronics Blog is a segment that aired on last weekend's Into Tomorrow over-the-air broadcast.
