Dodge chose the SEMA show to introduce an updated and more powerful version of its Challenger SRT8, while reaching into the retro bin to pull out a storied number from its racing past: SRT 392. The 392 cubic-inch Hemi V8, introduced in 1957, went on to become a favorite of racers for years.

And the displacement number is where the similarity ends.  The new Challenger SRT 392 has the newest and most advanced version of the Hemi V8, with variable cam timing and a fuel-saver mode that allows it to run on four cylinders in models equipped with an automatic transmission.

But what will matter most to SEMA fans is that the SRT 392 gets a big boost in power over the old SRT 6.1-liter engine, with 470 horsepower and a matching 470 lb.-ft. of torque. Dodge promises a 0-60 mph time in less than 5 seconds and a quarter mile elapsed time in the high 12-second range. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic.

The SRT suspension has been retuned for improved cornering and steering responsiveness, and to make the Challenger feel more agile—something Consumer Reports found lacking in the previous model. Having sampled the 2011 Challenger SRT8, we can say that the model-year updates make a noticeable difference.

Inside, interior appointments and materials have been improved, as we've seen in several Chrysler products since Italian automaker Fiat took a controlling interest in the company.

But lest anyone forget Dodge is an American brand, 1,492 Inaugural Edition models of the Challenger SRT8 392 will be built with special trim, badging, and a color choice of white with blue stripes, or blue with white stripes.
