2010 SEMA Show: Reflecting on the automotive aftermarket homecoming in Las Vegas

Consumer Reports News: November 01, 2010 11:25 AM

As we count down the hours until the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) show opens on Tuesday in Las Vegas, I want to take a moment to give the automotive aftermarket a round of applause. This massive industry routinely contributes innovations and improvements for the cars we drive. These are often things that started out as simple add-on accessories and proved so successful with consumers that car manufacturers adopted them as their own.

A case in point are the small parabolic inserts at the outer edge of the side view mirrors on our new Mustang GT. Like similar units known to KMart shoppers for years, they're a handy idea that provide a wider view of traffic to the sides, and compensate for blind spots in conventional mirrors. Ford has adopted the new-style mirrors on many models, and not a moment too soon, as there is a backwards trend now in rearward visibility. (Read: "Car visibility sinks into the sunset.") I hope other manufacturers to follow suit.

Other notable contributions for which credit aftermarket entrepreneurs have brought to the table include improved audio systems, driving lights, custom wheels and tires, and even privacy glass.

A great smorgasbord of accessories and custom cars, the SEMA show draws more than 1,500 exhibitors and 100,000 attendees each year, and it encompasses more than 800,000 square-feet of exhibit space.

We'll be there, covering the show and walking every inch of it from start to finish. We look forward to seeing what new products are coming this year and sharing the highlights here in the Cars blog. Follow along, as we seek the next great gadget, promising new products, and stand-out customized cars.
