TomTom has introduced next-generation portable navigation devices in time for the holiday season, with updated graphics and the promise of faster routing. Slender devices, the Go 2405 TM and Go 2505 TM introduce some new features to the TomTom line up, and bring together others seen on the company's premium units.
The new Go devices use glass touchscreens with "pinch and swipe" interactivity, much like an Apple iPhone. The software itself is said to be more intuitive--something we have noted as a weakness in the most-recent TomToms tested. (Related: "TomTom provides update for XL 350, XXL 550, and XL 335 GPS devices.") In addition, the new Go navigators have voice recognition, enabling hands-free control, and Bluetooth connectivity that invites hands-free calling. Traditional TomTom features such as spoken street names, reality view, lane guidance, and Help Me! are included.
The Go 2405 TM has a 4.3-inch screen, and the Go 2505 TM has a large 5.0-inch display. They use a new click-and-lock magnetic mount that reportedly allows the device to be removed with one hand.
In TomTom parlance, the "TM" in the product names denotes lifetime traffic and map updates. The real-time traffic data supplements historic traffic data to enable informed route planning, then continuous routing to adjust for changing conditions. The included maps cover the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with quarterly updates available. The devices are preloaded with seven million points of interest, spread across 60 categories.
The devices are initially available at Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, and TomTom.com, starting at $300. The larger Go 2505 TM is $320. While it may seem a bargain for the extra size, a five-inch screen can be oversized in some vehicles and it sacrifices some portability. TomTom expects the units to have a wider retail distribution in mid 2011.
We just purchased these Go devices and will report our findings as soon as testing is completed.
