This year, we've seen many new, intriguing features packed into camcorders—from those at the high end, like the Sony NEX-VG10, $2000, which can accept interchangeable SLR lenses, to those at the entry-level, like the Panasonic HM-TA1, $165, which can double as a webcam for your computer. So if you're looking for a camcorder to give as a holiday gift and need help choosing the right type, be it a full-size HD or SD model, or a smaller pocket model, you're in luck: We've updated all our camcorders Ratings with new models, including the two I just mentioned.
Here are some standouts from our new Ratings:
The first consumer-level 3D camcorder. Panasonic has been betting big on 3D this year by including such features in some of their HDTVs. So it wasn't surprising when they introduced the Panasonic HDC-SDT750 (pictured at right), $1400, an HD camcorder with 3D capabilities. Yes, it's pricey, but it's packed with features. And the HDC-SDT750 doesn't force you to shoot only 3D video: It comes with a 3D accessory that fits over the 12x optical zoom lens, which means you can switch between shooting 3D and 2D quickly and easily. Here's another nice feature: It includes an electronic viewfinder, which most camcorders don't have.
The Wi-Fi camcorder. Although various camera companies have experimented with wireless features over the years in select point-and-shoots for transferring still images, we can't remember seeing any camcorders with comparable features. This year, Samsung introduced three HD models—the HMX-S16, $1000, HMX-S15, $850, and HMX-S10, $700—with Wi-Fi capabilities that let you either stream your video or transfer video clips to your computer.
A pocket cam with a swiveling lens. Our new Ratings also include some intriguing pocket camcorders, which are very easy to use and are the least costly camcorders available. And more of them are shipping with some interesting features. For example, the Samsung HMX-E10, $150, includes a non-zoom lens that can swivel 270 degrees, handy for shooting a self-portrait video. But like most pocket cams, it doesn't have an optical zoom.
