    Post-blizzard travel update

Consumer Reports News: December 29, 2010 12:07 PM

In the wake of a series of holiday storms, transportation officials continue to dig out roads, rails, and runways throughout the United States, but particularly on the East Coast. In the meantime, hundreds of thousands of travelers are still recovering—while many more are still waiting to travel.

Here's a brief rundown on how transportation providers are responding:

    • The Air Transport Association has compiled a December Winter Travel Alerts page that provides direct links to advisories from nine domestic carriers: Alaska, AirTran, American, Continental, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, United, and US Airways. The nation's largest airline trade organization "strongly encourages" passengers to check with their airlines before traveling.

    • Most airlines are waiving penalties for changes, so check with your carrier for the specifics.

    • If all else fails, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) offers advice on how to file a complaint against an airline.

    • For those flying within Europe, the European Commission offers detailed information on your rights as an airline passenger on its site.

    • Amtrak has continually updated its site regarding service disruptions on the Northeast Corridor lines; for the time being, it will pay to check with Amtrak and other local rail and bus lines to ensure service has returned to normal.

    • As for those traveling by highway, the DOT provides National Traffic and Road Closure Information that can help you chart the best possible course. Obviously it also pays to check with your bus line as well.

We'll continue to provide additional updates as necessary.—William J. McGee
