Tracking Santa through OnStar

Consumer Reports News: December 24, 2010 06:08 AM

GM's OnStar advisors will again offer both naughty and nice subscribers updates on the jolly ol' fella's whereabouts as Santa Claus travels around the globe this Christmas. Starting at 6 a.m. EST on Christmas Eve through 5 a.m. on Christmas morning, OnStar subscribers just need to press the in-car button to get a status on Santa's whereabouts.

The tracking of Santa's journey will be based on data received from the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). The NORAD system uses radar, satellites, Santa Cams, and fighter jets to monitor movement on Christmas Eve. NORAD explains that its satellites use infrared to detect heat and they can also follow the signature from Rudolph's shiny red nose.

Those without an OnStar subscription can still track Santa via https://www.noradsanta.org, 1-877-446-6723, or even through social media at Facebook or Twitter @noradsanta.

Those with a mobile phone can track with NORAD and see Santa via Google maps.

NORAD and its predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) have tracked Santa's flight since 1955.
