2011 CES: Parrot Asteroid - Simple, elegant, Android-powered car stereo

Consumer Reports News: January 07, 2011 09:56 PM

Among the many large-screened automotive head units at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the Parrot Asteroid caught our attention with its simple, elegant design and Android operating system. The high-tech receiver is centered around digital playback, with USB, iPod, SD Card, and Bluetooth A2DP compatibility, along with an AM/FM receiver. With a button push, the Asteroid will speak the name of an artist or album. And it allows voice-directed searches through music files for hands-free operation.

The Asteroid gets especially interesting when augmented with optional equipment. A GPS dongle, for instance, can enable geo-location services, such as finding local businesses and parking, or contacting a point of interest hands-free. It can also facilitate traffic alerts.

A 3G key can allow the Asteroid to stream audio from Web radio station, rather than via Bluetooth from a smart phone. The ability to search music by voice extends to this feature.

A dial control makes it easy to flip through different modes, such as radio, navigation, Web, and phone. The menus are displayed on a 3.2-inch screen.

Based on the Android operating system, the Asteroid is compatible with applications that can bring added functionality, such as Google Maps, speed camera notification, and Internet radio.

It is really like a mini infotainment system. Emphasis on mini. With all the features and menus, it has the potential for being a driving distraction, but once learned, the voice commands for common functions show promise.

The real appeal of this device will be for older-car drivers lusting after the functionality touted by the Ford Sync system and its competitors.

The Parrot Asteroid goes on sale in the second quarter of 2011. No price has been announced yet.
