2011 CES: TomTom introduces next-gen HD traffic service, new Via mid-level GPS navigators

Consumer Reports News: January 06, 2011 12:45 PM

    TomTom Via GPS navigator.

At the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week, TomTom unveiled its next-generation traffic service, called HD Traffic, as well as a new mid-level navigator line named Via.

HD Traffic first appears on the flagship Go 2505 model, with a new variant dubbed Go 2505 M Live. The premium Go 2505 devices are distinguished by a 5-inch glass capacitive touchscreen with "pinch and swipe" interactivity, much like an Apple iPhone, and a slick magnetic mount.

As the name suggests, HD Traffic adds more resolution to the traffic information provided via the AT&T wireless network. HD Traffic covers major and secondary roads, and it delivers traffic updates every two minutes--much more frequently than 15-20 minutes associated with traditional traffic services. Based on traffic data, the device can automatically reroute as appropriate for the quickest travel time. The "M" in TomTom parlance indicates the Go 2505 M Live includes free map updates. The Go 2505 M Live goes on sale mid-2011 with a $349 retail price, about $30 more than the current Go 2505 TM with lifetime traffic. The Go 2505 M Live will include a trial subscription for the Live services, including HD Traffic, local search fuel prices, and weather.

The slender Via series also hits the market mid-year. The Via 1405 and 1435 navigators have 4.3-inch screens, and the Via 1505 and 1535 have large 5-inch screens. The four units can be had with optional lifetime maps and/or traffic.

All Via models feature the latest TomTom software, with spoken street names, reality view, and lane assist. Dressed up with brushed-aluminum finish, the Via 1435 and 1535 add Bluetooth hands-free calling and voice recognition. Pricing will start at $169.

We have tested the current Go 2405 and Go 2505 models (see our GPS ratings), and we will evaluate these new navigators once they reach the market.
