Perhaps the coolest thing about Trane's Comfort Link II thermostat isn't the fact that you can program it from any room in the house but that you can use it as a digital picture frame when you don't want to look at the numbers and other information. But if you like data as much as we do, you can use it to track your energy use, show indoor humidity levels and even get a five-day weather forecast.
Programmable thermostats can cut your heating and cooling bills by up to 20 percent. But you still have to go to the thermostat to change settings—or wait until you get home if you forgot to turn down the heat.
Trane's ComfortLink II thermostat lets you punch in the temperatures you want from another room on your computer—and later this year from a remote location such as your workplace or even from your cabin by the lake using a laptop or smart phone.
The new thermostat costs about $700 to $900 installed and connects to your home's heating and cooling system like other programmable thermostats. It uses wireless RF communications to let you maintain energy-saving programs or raise and lower temperatures room by room.
Later this year, you'll also be able to link the ComfortLink thermostat with computer apps that remotely manage lights, appliances, door locks, security cameras, and other components of total home management. Or if you don't mind walking to your themostat, Consumer Reports' tests have found effective, energy-saving models for well under $50.
