Builders' Show: An Electrolux range with two time-saving features

Consumer Reports News: January 13, 2011 01:10 PM

Some kitchen ranges have dual ovens for cooking two different dishes at the same time. And some have induction elements, which use an electromagnetic field for faster, more efficient heating. Electrolux now offers two 30-inch ranges that are the first to blend both of these features in one unit.

The four induction elements on the built-in version on display at the International Builders' Show include a 3,400-watt element that promises to boil water in just 90 seconds. Besides saving time, induction saves energy by sending most of the heat right to the pot or pan, instead of the surrounding surface.

The convection heating element and more than four cubic feet of oven capacity can also slice roasting time by 30 percent, according to Electrolux. And if you're tired of the usual controls, a touch of the hand activates the control panel using a sensing system Electrolux calls Wave Touch. The panel fades to black when you're done cooking.

You'll find a full-sized oven and a second, smaller oven for casseroles and other smaller meals. Ball bearings help the racks in the larger oven slide out easily, while the door is designed to stay open at whatever angle you put it.

How much does all this luxury cost? This built-in model is designed to sit flush with counters and base cabinets and sells for about $3,500. A freestanding version with rear-mounted controls cost about $2,900. That's still roughly $1,000 more than some of the most capable dual-oven and inductions ranges we've tested. But if you want both without buying two ranges, one of these Electrolux dual-oven induction ranges could be a hot deal.
