After eight reports of fires, six of which caused property damage, GE is recalling 198,000 dehumidifiers with compressors that can short circuit and pose a fire hazard. In addition to the fires, the company has received 14 reports of smoke and fumes, according to the recall notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The recall includes 30-pint and 40-pint dehumidifiers made between November 2006 and August 2007, and during April 2008. The units are white with a front-loading water bucket. "GE" or "Professional Series" and digital controls are located on top of the dehumidifier.They were sold at Walmart, Sam's Club, Home Depot, Menards and other retail stores from February 2007 through June 2009 for between $140 and $180. The model and serial numbers can be found on the back of the units. See the recall notice for a full list.
The dehumidifiers were manufactured by GD Midea Air Conditioning Equipment Ltd., of China. Consumers with a recalled dehumidifiers should not return it to the place of purchase but instead return it to an authorized service center for a free repair.
