Which chicken wings scored a touchdown in our tests?

Consumer Reports News: January 05, 2011 11:11 AM

Hey football fans, we've got chicken wing ratings just in time for the first two playoff games on Saturday. Our experienced tasters tried seven frozen products, which can all be prepared in 20 minutes or less.  And, spoiler alert, none of the wings had enough fried crispiness to be excellent, but Bell & Evans was best overall. They had a pleasant broiled/roasted taste and were quite spicy, with a hint of cumin, paprika, and red pepper. The texture was nice, and they tasted less fatty than most. The other wings that rated very good were T.G.I. Friday's, Perdue and Cafe W (Walgreens).

We don't recommend snacking on wings at every game between now and the Super Bowl in early February. The wings have 140 to 190 calories and 9 to 13 grams of fat per serving. For most brands, that's two or three pieces. Sodium is up to 43 percent of the recommended daily limit. If you eat more than a few pieces and add sauce, the numbers rise further.

To mix it up a little, how about trying some of the frozen pizzas we tested recently. The best, a trio of very different but very good pies, included the artisanal Amy's Cornmeal Crust 3 Cheese, the Chicago-style Home Run Inn Classic Cheese, and the Italian-style DiGiorno Rising Crust Four Cheese. For this report we bought and baked more than 100 cheese pies, which is one of the most popular choices.

And serve some beer with those wings or pizza  -- try a $19 case of lager and wheat beers and pale and amber ales from Costco that held its own in our taste tests against similar (but more expensive) brews from Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada, and Paulaner. Game on.
