Just as the Volkswagen New Beetle has its roof squashed, Volkswagen is introducing a new soft-top convertible at the Geneva Motor Show next month. And after four years with the Eos and the New Beetle convertibles, the company is bringing back the Cabriolet nameplate.
VW's new Cabriolet looks much like the Eos hard-top convertible, only with a soft top and eight inches chopped off the trunk since it's not needed to store the retracted hard top. Instead, the soft top stows traditionally in a well behind the rear seat. It folds flat to the trunk, top-side-up to avoid the need for a tonneau cover, when the top is down. Eight cubic feet of trunk space remains behind the tiny lid.
The new Cabriolet uses a pop-up rollbar, rather than the fixed hoop that gave previous Cabriolets their distinctive picnic-basket-handle look. It is based on the Golf and shares that hatchback's dimensions and wheelbase.
When the new Cabriolet goes on sale in Europe, buyers will have a choice of six gasoline and two diesel engines. But the company has not announced when or if the car will be sold in North America.
