Olympic Paints announced this week the launch of ColorClix, a mobile application that lets you snap a picture of any object and match it to one of the manufacturer's 1,200 hues. It's a nifty device, if not particularly novel. Behr's ColorSmart, Benjamin Moore's Color Capture, and Sherwin-Williams' Color Snap all do essentially the same thing. That didn't stop Olympic from calling its launch a watershed moment: "Our ColorClix app transforms how consumers take their daily color inspirations—colors in anything from furniture to a floral arrangement or an art pattern—and turn them into a design reality in their homes," said Jennifer Dodson, Senior Marketing Manager, Olympic Paint, in the news release.
While paint color matching apps are more or less the same, paints themselves are not. That's why instead of telling you which apps are best, we'd do better telling you which paints earned the highest marks in Consumer Reports tests. In our latest interior paint report, products by Behr and Benjamin Moore were picked by our testers in all three finishes: satin (for most applications), flat (for low-traffic areas), and semi-gloss (for trim, doors, and shelves). Sherwin-Williams and Olympic, however, did not make the cut—and no app can change that.
