Mobile gamers, rejoice: Not only will the Nintendo 3DS handheld game system play games, but it'll play nice with Netflix movies, too.
At the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Nintendo said it has inked a deal with AT&T and Netflix that will allow the handheld 3DS to use any of the wireless carrier's 10,000 Wi-Fi hotspots to stream videos from the popular movie-rental website.
The Netflix capability won't be available out of the box, since it will require a firmware update, which Nintendo says it will have ready by May. While that's about two months after the March 27 U.S. rollout of the 3DS, Nintendo also hopes to offer 30 (or so) 3DS game titles by then, as well as an online store that will sell classic Nintendo games remastered for the new 3DS.
We've had some "hands-on" time with the Nintendo 3DS at January's CES. But our testers are eager to get an actual retail 3DS into our labs for testing.
We've also been watching the recent developments in Netflix and similar streaming video services and set-top boxes. We know how streaming video services appear on big HDTVs. But what will Netflix look like on the 3DS' tiny screen?
What do you think? Would you want to watch a Netflix movie on a Nintendo 3DS? What about if it was in 3D? Weigh in below.
