Recall: 2007-2009 Hyundai Elantra—Air bag defect

Consumer Reports News: March 18, 2011 02:38 PM

Hyundai has issued two recalls of the Hyundai Elantra over air bag sensors that could malfunction. The first recall affects over 188,000 2007-2009 Elantras manufactured between July 14, 2006 and November 1, 2008. The front passenger seat weight sensor designed to deactivate the front air bag when people of a certain size occupy the seat could become contaminated and not work, causing the air bag to deploy regardless of the weight of the passenger. This could cause the air bag to deploy in crashes when it shouldn't, thereby increasing the risk of injury.

The second recall is for nearly 100,000 2007-2008 Elantras manufactured between July 14, 2006 and August 29, 2007, many of which are covered by the first recall. This recall affects the driver's seat sensor that determines the driver's position in order to deploy the front air bag at the appropriate pressure for that seating position. The air bag module may not have a stable signal from that seat position, potentially causing the air bag to deploy at a higher pressure than intended and therefore risking injury.

For the first recall, dealers will install a protective cover to prevent contamination of the seat sensor. For the second recall, dealers will reprogram the air bag module free of charge. The recall campaign will begin in April.
