If you're having trouble turning off your brain at night, your favorite glowing gadgets may be at least partly to blame, according to a poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation.
Respondents confirmed "pervasive use of communications technology in the hour before bed," including TV, computer, phone, and video-game use. And as our sister site, the Consumer Reports Health Blog, noted, Charles Czeisler, PhD, MD of Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital says that exposure to artifical light before bedtime can increase our alertness levels, interfere with circadian rhythms, and suppress the release of melatonin, a hormone that helps us fall asleep.
The effects of insufficient sleep include mood alteration, driving while drowsy, and increased susceptibility to certain illnesses. For more information on the study and lots of tips on how to get a better night's sleep, check out our Health Blog.
