The Texas House has approved a new bill that would allow the state to raise speed limits on some highways to 85 mph during the day. The Texas Senate is considering a similar measure. If passed, it would be the highest speed limit in the country.
Engineering and traffic studies would have to be performed, however, before this could become a reality. The state already has more than 520 miles of highway with an 80-mph speed limit.
Beyond safety concerns, there is a another drawback to such high speeds: Poor fuel economy. So like it or not, driving at a more moderate speed saves you money at the pump, especially given today's gas prices. Based on our testing, driving at 55 mph instead of 65 or 75 provides significantly better gas mileage. Other suggestions to get more miles per gallon include driving smoothly, reducing unnecessary drag and keeping your tires properly inflated, among others. (Read more gas-saving tips.)
Saving on gas can also be determined by what you drive. Check out our list of the most fuel-efficient cars and SUVs.
