Converting Star Wars to 3D cost more than making original movie

Consumer Reports News: April 05, 2011 10:33 AM

It has cost more money thus far to convert "Star Wars" to 3D than it took to make the 1977 classic cult film. At CinemaCon last week, director George Lucas likened 3D to the introduction of sound and color in film.

Lucas and "Avatar" director James Cameron sat on a panel along with CEO of DreamWorks Animation, Jeffrey Katzenberg. All three agreed that digital filmmaking is in its infancy, according to the Wall Street Journal. The conversion of "Star Wars" to 3D started eight years ago, but that timeline didn't seem to bother the panel. The three men agreed that rushing 3D production results only in shoddy effects, which they termed "2.2D" instead of real 3D.

In addition to advising filmmakers to take their time and get 3D right, the three men also had advice for movie theaters. Katzenberg suggested theaters think up new ways to get consumers to buy more tickets. For example, he would like to see more theaters have meal service like an actual restaurant. Lucas agreed and asked the audience at CinemaCon to think of more ideas. What would you like to see offered up by your local theater, besides the latest releases?
