More than 136,000 Mercedes-Benz M-Class vehicles are being subjected to a safety recall warns the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Mercedes cruise control might not disengage if drivers step on the SUV's brake pedals.
The NHTSA's safety bulletin warns that the defect affects the 2000 to 2004 model-year Mercedes M-Class and M-Class AMG SUVs. Drivers of those Mercedes-Benz SUVs may find it takes an unusually high level of force on the brake pedal to turn off the cruise control while driving. Pumping the brakes rather than using a constant push may also fail to disengage the cruise control system. Even with the problem, the cruise control's stalk still functions and can be used to turn off the system.
Mercedes will instruct affected owners to bring their vehicles to the local dealership for a free repairs. In the meantime, owners can contact Mercedes-Benz (800-367-6372) or the NHTSA's Safer Car website (https://www.safercar.gov) for more information.
