Study: TVs now get replaced sooner

Consumer Reports News: April 25, 2011 10:08 AM

According to a new report by market research firm DisplaySearch, we're now replacing our TVs—both older tube TVs and newer flat-panel models—more quickly than in the past 10 to 15 years.

"Digital broadcast transitions and more affordable flat panel TVs have caused consumers to replace their TVs, especially CRT models, in record numbers," said Paul Gagnon, director of North America TV market research at DisplaySearch. Gagnon noted, though, that consumers aren't interested in trading in a recently purchased TV just to get a new feature.

The study, which looked at TV buying trends in 14 markets worldwide, listed several reasons why consumers are replacing their TVs. While the results vary by region, key findings included these highlights:

  • Consumers wanted a flat-panel TV or HDTV, or often both. And the decision to replace a TV was also very strongly linked to wanting a larger set with better picture quality.
  • While replacing a broken or outdated TV was a strong motivating factor, it wasn't one of the top reasons.
  • Getting new, advanced features, like Internet connectivity and 3D, wasn't a strong motivator driving new TV sales, indicating that consumers aren't going out to buy a new TV just because these features become available.
  • Price was an important consideration in TV replacement decisions.
  • And trust in the TV brand was slightly more important than other reasons, except in Japan where it was very important. DisplaySearch said that because there are now so many flat-panel TV brands and price points, "price may be trumping brand selection." The firm also notes that with many major brands aggressively matching low-price competition, the playing field has been leveled but at the cost of brand importance.

If you owned an older direct-view tube TV, think back to how long you owned it, and whether you're now replacing TVs at a faster rate than in the past. Also, let us know your biggest reason for getting a new TV.
