Although the Sony PlayStation Network is now back online, the entertainment giant seems to be a prime target for anonymous hackers: This time, personal data from an unknown number of Sony customers on its Greek website, SonyMusic.gr, has been stolen—and exposed online.
Over the weekend, Hacker News reports that a hacker, with the alias of "b4p_vipera," posted online the customer data purloined from an attack on the Sony site earlier this month. The data—which included e-mail addresses, phone numbers and passwords—was apparently obtained by using a so-called "SQL injection attack," say security experts.
This latest attack on Sony may not be as expansive as the previousPSN break-in, where nearly 100 million global subscribers' account information was stolen. Although more sensitive customer data—such as credit card info—may not have been exposed, online criminals can still use the other information for phishing expeditions.
Consumer Reports' latest State of the Net story outlines new online security risks facing consumers. And for the tips on safeguarding your personal data online, see our Guide to Online Security.
