Having numerous friends and family members who've ridden the diet roller coaster over the years—lose some weight, gain some weight, find a new "miracle" diet—I admit I'm a tad skeptical of "diets." Most seem more shtick than substance. No carbs! No fruit! Nothing cooked! Eat grapefruit! Cabbage soup! Twinkies! Eat like a gorilla, like a cave-man, like in the Bible!

And for me, that isn't a formal diet at all, but just simple, healthy eating. That means mostly produce and whole grains, with occasional treats—and lots of exercise. Maybe it's because I'm distrustful of "quick fixes," or just don't think eating needs to be made so complicated. In any case, it's the one that works for me, and I'm sticking with it.
