For car racing fans, the Indianapolis 500 is the ultimate race, with a rich history of drama, engineering, and high-speed heroes. So what better way to celebrate the 100th birthday of the American motorsport than with a relatively slow-speed "snail mail" stamp?
On Friday, the United States Postal Service began selling special First Class "Forever" stamps commemorating the first Indy 500 race. The stamp features an Art-Deco representation of the Marmon "Wasp," the winning black-and-yellow racecar driven by Ray Harroun on May 30, 1911.
Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said at the ceremony dedicating the stamp:
I won't be so bold as to predict the winner of [this year's Indy 500] race, but I will predict that 50 or 100 years from now the U.S. Postal Service will issue another stamp to commemorate the next milestone anniversary of this great event.
Those are pretty bold words—especially considering Donahoe recently told Congress of the postal agency's deepening financial woes. Perhaps the next anniversary will be celebrated electronically...
