In our latest batch of laptop Ratings (available to subscribers), Samsung's new Series 9 thin-and-light laptop (shown at top right) edges out the Apple MacBook Air and rises to the top among 13-inch models.
It's a great-looking system with curving lines and interesting design innovations, including ports tucked into tiny compartments that close up and all but disappear when you're not using them. We found that the Series 9 was more versatile than the Air, with its backlit keyboard, Ethernet, and high-def webcam. But the Samsung laptop costs a few hundred dollars more than the Air.
We've added 18 other laptops to our Ratings, including Acer's Iconia-6120 TouchBook (shown at bottom right; click to enlarge). What distinguishes this laptop is its dual touchscreens, one of which can double as a virtual keyboard or provide extra screen real estate when you're browsing online. You might also want to check out the Toshiba Satellite L635-S3030, a fully equipped laptop configured for kids with special software, a kids' browser, extra security features, and a wipeable keyboard.
Our new Ratings also include a dozen new desktops, among them the latest iMac all-in-one desktops, and a few new netbooks. For our full evaluations, see our Ratings.
