Revamped diapers on the way from Pampers

Consumer Reports News: May 20, 2011 09:18 AM

Pampers annual update of its diaper products will highlight softness rather than dryness.

When Procter & Gamble, which makes Pampers, last spring introduced "Dry Max" for enhanced dryness to its Pampers Swaddlers for young babies, and Cruisers for larger babies and toddlers, the feature seemed designed to appeal to parents' desire for dryer babies.

But some parents complained that the redesigned diapers caused blisters and chemical burns on their babies' skin. The Consumer Product Safety Commission had investigated the complaints about the diapers. According to Scott Wolfson, director of the Office of Information and Public Affairs at the CPSC, there was "no need for corrective action" nor for a recall.

Bryan McCleary, director of external relations for baby care at Procter & Gamble, Co. asserted that the current re-design of Pampers Cruisers had nothing to do with consumer complaints.

"It's part of the regular cycle we have," said McCleary. "We update every year or so. There are two or three main upgrades. We're always looking to improve our products. We listened to suggestions from moms, who love the softness of the earlier design of Pampers Swaddlers. We've ‘Swaddlerized' Cruisers."

These new diapers will feature Sesame Street pictures on the outside, with a white inside liner and a "longer absorbent core that extends farther up the back," said McCleary

The new Pampers, which will no longer have "Dry Max" on the package, are being launched nationally in July.
