Citing Consumer Reports's 2011 State of the Net Survey at a Senate hearing yesterday, Senator Jay Rockefeller (W. Va.) blasted as "indefensible"Facebook's practice of permitting 7.5 million underage children to use the site.
Rockefeller reportedly told Facebook Chief Technology Officer Bret Taylor, "I want you to defend your company here because I don't know how you can."
The Consumer Reports survey ignited a firestorm last week, when it also found that 5 million Facebook users are age 10 and under. Facebook's policies require all users to be at least 13 years of age.
We'll have more on this story as it develops.
The survey findings that prompted Senator Rockefeller to confront Facebook is on ConsumerReports.org. The site also contains the full report on the state of online security and what parents can do to protect their children online.
