Apple to announce iCloud, streaming media service, at WWDC Monday

Google and Amazon had better make some room on the cloud: In an unusual move for the company, Apple pre-announced what CEO Steve Jobs will be announcing at its WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) this coming Monday, including an "upcoming cloud services offering," iCloud.

Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS, will also be unveiled, says Apple, along with iOS 5, the next version of Apple's mobile operating system. But perhaps most significant is the iCloud announcement. The LA Times blog Company Town reported yesterday that four major music labels have already signed on for the streaming service, according to "sources familiar with the negotiations."

"Initially [it] will be offered for a free period to people who buy music from Apple's iTunes digital download store, allowing users to upload their music to Apple's computers where they can then play from a Web browser or Internet-connected Apple device," according to the blog.

Although you never know with Apple, this advance announcement further shrivels the already-slim hope that the company will unveil a new iPhone at the conference, as it has for the past three years. Analysts have speculated that by announcing its WWDC keynote news ahead of time, the company is "setting expectations" that no new phone will be announced. The delay could be attributed to parts shortages as well as to giving AT&T a chance to bolster its 4G network. Instead, we may get a new iPhone announcement this fall.

Stay tuned, as we'll watch for additional news coming out of next week's WWDC.
