Samsung, which just ended a promotion that provided two free pairs of active 3D glasses with the purchase of any 2011 Samsung 3D TV, is replacing that offer with a new, similar one that will run through August 15th.
One key difference, though, is that the offer is good only through authorized retailers at their discretion. That means they can decide not to honor the promotion, so you should clarify whether you'll get the freebie glasses before you make your purchase.
For the previous offer, when some retailers weren't providing the free 3D glasses to customers, Samsung set up a fulfillment website that allowed customers to get them directly from Samsung. As of June 28, 2011, that program—which Consumer Reports applauded when it was launched— was discontinued.
As a result, you'll need to speak with the retailer prior to purchasing a 3D TV both to see if it is participating in the promotion and to make sure that the TV is eligible, as Samsung is reserving the right to exclude certain models from the offer. If the retailer is offering the promotion and the TV is eligible, you'll get two sets of Samsung active-shutter 3D glasses (model SSG-3100GB, which otherwise sell for $50 each) at no additional cost as part of a 3D starter kit.
If you decide to purchase a 2011 Samsung 3D TV, let us know whether the retailer honored the free-glasses promotion or if Samsung is excluding the model from the offer.
