College students can now rent digital textbooks through Amazon's Kindle Textbook Rental program at 80 percent off the list price, according to an Amazon news release today.

Titles can be rented for varying amounts of time, from one month up to a full calendar year. The longer the rental, however, the higher the price. Students can also choose to extend their rental or purchase the book outright. for example, an organic chemistry textbook is sold for just $99 on the Kindle, but can be rented for about $42, depending on the rental period.

According to Amazon, "tens of thousands of textbooks" are available through the e-textbook program.

In addition to the Kindle, rentals can be read by way of free Kindle apps for PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, Android, Windows Phone 7, and Blackberry 7.

The Barnes & Noble Nook also offers e-textbook rentals, including discounted prices. That book sellers website advertises 60 percent discounts off list prices.

With the cost of textbooks an increasing financial burden, over the years many students have turned to online rental programs that then ship the books to students. And there is always the brick and mortar campus bookstore that will have used textbooks and previous editions at discounted prices.
