Energy Star's Most Efficient program, as we reported earlier this year, is designed to make it easier for consumers to find and choose the most energy efficient washers, refrigerators, televisions, and heating and cooling equipment from among all the Energy Star products. Currently brand and model information is available on Energy Star's website and will be also available in stores on displays near the products. The designation will be updated annually with the goal of limiting it to the top five percent of products in terms of energy efficiency.
Later this year, the Environmental Protection Agency, which jointly administers the program with the Department of Energy, will start the process of considering more product categories for the program in 2012. "We want to encourage innovation among manufacturers and highlight better technologies and better savings for the consumers who want them," said the Department of Energy's Kathleen Hogan at today's press conference on the program.
But a product that doesn't perform well, no matter how efficient, is no bargain. Our Ratings of refrigerators and washing machines include efficiency scores and annual operating costs, and also tell you how well these products work. Our television Ratings also include performance scores and annual operating costs.
