The Toro Company is asking owners of many 2011 models of self-propelled walk-behind mowers to bring their mowers in for repair if the self-propel drive system has failed. The models involved in Toro's announcement pose no safety issue and are not being recalled. The free fix requires replacing three screws in the transmission.
The problem, which Toro noticed after a rate of customer returns that was higher than normal, encompasses 20 models in the Toro Super Recycler, Recycler and Commercial 21 lines. Among the first two lines are three models in our ratings for self-propelled mowers: the Super Recycler 20092, Recycler 20333, and Recycler 20332.
The Toro notice lists all the models and, for each line, tells where you can find the mower's serial number so you can match it against the range. For both the Super Recycler and Recycler lines, the serial number can be found on the rear of the left side of the mower.
If you have a Toro self-propelled rear-drive mower with this problem, the manufacturer asks that you take it to a local Toro authorized servicing dealer (even if you bought it at Home Depot) for a free repair under warranty. To locate one, go to Toro's website or call 1-866-946-3119. Because the repair requires disassembling a portion of your mower, Toro does not recommend you try to repair the machine yourself.
