Breaking the ice: How Consumer Reports tests blenders

Consumer Reports News: August 17, 2011 01:07 PM

Crushing ice is one of the tasks Consumer Reports performs in its blender tests. To judge durability, our lab technician throws seven ice cubes in a blender, runs it for one minute, then repeats the test—45 times. Almost half the models in our blender Ratings aced the ice crush test, but only four did so quietly.

Three blenders on our recommended list including a CR Best Buy, the Ninja Master Prep Professional QB1004, excelled at crushing ice and were also very good at noise (none of the 51 blenders were excellent on that score). The Krups KB720 matched those scores for ice crushing and quietness but, unfortunately, didn’t fare well on some of our other tasks and fell near the bottom of our ratings. Still, some of the smoothie lovers in our readership thought the Krups did a great job for them, as they commented in our user reviews.
