Google has acquired daily deal site The Dealmap, which aggregates offers from local businesses. Last year, Google tried a similar purchase of online coupon site Groupon, but the deal didn't go through. This latest move is seen as a way to further compete with Groupon and other similar online deal sites.
The Dealmap launched last May, and counts more than 2 million users of its daily deals services via, Web, email, and social media.
In a press release The Dealmap said the acquisition by Google will help it expand its services. In the meantime, as the local deals site integrates into the Google brand, it will continue to offer daily deals as usual. "For the time being, we will continue to support The Dealmap's core products and partner services. People will still be able to access local and daily deals through The Dealmap website, mobile apps, and daily email, and we'll continue supporting The Dealmap API and feeds for existing sourcing and distribution partners."
In addition to The Dealmap, Google also has Google Offers as part of its arsenal. Google Offers is an online coupon service similar to that of Groupon and recently launched in New York and the Bay Area. Google Offers is scheduled to arrive in other major U.S. cities soon.
