How to cut the lawn while keeping yourself intact

Consumer Reports News: August 09, 2011 05:17 PM

With blades that whir at more than 200 miles-per-hour, today's lawn mowers can pose a real danger to the careless user. Add flip-flops, headphones and a can of beer and you've got an accident waiting to happen. Unfortunately, doctors see far too many mowing injuries each season—90,000 annually—and as one doctor said, "those are life-changing events."

We're not blaming the victim for all of these mishaps but as some homeowners fessed up in a recent Consumer Reports survey, many have bad mowing habits. Twenty-five percent listen to music through headphones, 14 percent mow in flip-flops or sandals, eight percent drink beer or other alcohol and four percent text or talk on the phone. Hello, have you gone mad? In this video, Peter Sawchuk, who conducts our mower tests, shows the safest way to mow.
