HP wants to bring WebOS to cars, appliances

Consumer Reports News: August 17, 2011 03:38 PM

Hewlett-Packard is looking to expand its WebOS platform beyond smart phones and tablets and bring it to cars and appliances.

According to The Wall Street Journal, HP envisions a world where many of the products consumers use can connect to the Web and have WebOS functionality. HP has said in the past that it wants to expand the WebOS system by licensing it to other mobile device makers.

Adding WebOS functionality could be an advantage for manufacturers, as it would make their products different and more intelligent. But sources the Journal spoke to expressed doubt that WebOS could make headway into either the cars or appliances market.

Experts believe WebOS might have a hard time penetrating the car market, because there is already competition for Web functionality in that area. Features like Ford's MyFord Touch, BMW Assist, Hyundai BlueLink, and Toyota Entune all bring Internet-capable features to automobiles. However, WebOS could help other vehicles catch up to innovation leaders.

Additionally, appliance maker Whirlpool, which also owns brands such as Maytag and KitchenAid, told the Journal that it wouldn't be adding WebOS to any of its appliances. Whirlpool said it is skeptical the operating system will hold up over the long period of time its appliances are designed to last.

Other appliances makers have ventured into Internet functionality, too. Samsung, for example, has added apps to one of its French-door refrigerators, allowing consumers to download recipes, stream music, check the weather, and keep an online calendar on the appliance. Other companies also revealed some of their smart appliances at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.
