Netflix today announced a juvenile addition to its website: Called Just for Kids, it's an interface to streaming content for children ages 12 and under that's optimized for the way kids experience movies and TV shows.
On the Netflix blog, VP of Product Innovation Todd Yellin writes:
Watch kids watch a movie or TV show. Notice how they differ from adults. First, kids love to watch the same thing over and over again. More importantly, kids identify with shows more by the characters than by the title.
Just for Kids shows up as a separate tab on the Netflix home page. When you click it, you'll see movie titles arranged in horizontal rows by category—Talking Animals, Friends, Girl Power, and more. But also on the top row are icons of characters (both cartoon and human) from popular movies and shows. Kids can click on these to find and watch the content that features them.
The company plans to bring the Just for Kids functionality to the Nintendo Wii, Apple iPad, and other devices, said Yellin.
