The Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Cargill Meat Solutions in Springdale, Ark., have announced today the recall of about 36 million pounds of Salmonella-tainted ground turkey meat.
The meat—contaminated with a multi-drug resistant strain of Salmonella Heidelberg, the virus that causes the food-borne illness—was distributed nationwide in various forms. As previously announced by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention two days ago, one death and 76 illnesses have already be linked to the tainted turkey meat. (Three additional illness tied to this recall have been further identified by the FSIS since then.)
The FSIS will release on its website (https://www.fsis.usda.gov/FSIS_Recalls/Open_Federal_Cases/index.asp) the list of retailers which distributed the contaminated turkey meat from Cargill. But the FSIS also notes that all the products being recalled (see below) bear a label with the establishment number "P-963" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
Cargill and the FSIS recommend that consumers with the bad turkey meat products should return the items to the store where purchased and to follow safe food handling practices. (See Consumer Reports' Food Safety Guide and the FDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service website, https://www.fsis.usda.gov, for food safety tips.)
Consumers with questions regarding this recall should call Cargill's toll-free phone line: 888-812-1646.
