Sony introduced today two new—and pricey—sets of binoculars, the $1,400 DEV-3 and the $2,000 DEV-5. But what sets these spyglasses into the stratosphere? They are, Sony claims, "the world's first digital binoculars."
Both Sony digital binocs share a similar design: a traditional hand-held optical binocular merged with a digital camcorder. The hefty size and distinctive look of both shows that Sony has put some serious capabilities into devices that have, till now, resisted the digital revolution.
The Sony DEV-3 and DEV-5 digital binoculars, which will become available in November, feature:
The DEV-5 adds 20X digital zoom and a built-in GPS receiver that lets owners automatically geotag videos and images captured by the digital binoculars. Also included in the $600 premium over the DEV-3: Accessories such as a carrying case, neck strap, finder cap, a lens cover and large eye cups.
